NaturoBest's Prenatal Trimester 2 & 3 Plus Breastfeeding is a stage-specific prenatal multivitamin and multimineral formula designed to address the heightened and changing nutritional demands of the second half of pregnancy and the entire breastfeeding period. Clinically formulated by an experienced fertility naturopath, it represents a meaningful step up from generic one-size-fits-all prenatal vitamins — delivering therapeutic doses of nutrients that are specifically relevant from week 14 of pregnancy through to weaning, in forms chosen for superior bioavailability and tolerability.

The formula is built around several genuinely premium ingredient technologies that distinguish it from mainstream pharmacy prenatal options:

Active Folate — Quatrefolic® + Folinic Acid Rather than synthetic folic acid, this formula provides folate as Quatrefolic® — the fourth-generation form of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF), the biologically active form the body actually uses — alongside folinic acid. This is clinically significant because a substantial proportion of the population carries one or more variants of the MTHFR gene that impair conversion of synthetic folic acid to its active form. Quatrefolic® bypasses this metabolic step entirely, ensuring active folate is available regardless of MTHFR genotype. NaturoBest was the first prenatal supplement brand in Australia and New Zealand to include Quatrefolic® alongside folinic acid in this formulation.

Highly Bioavailable Iron — Ferrochel® (Iron Bisglycinate) Iron requirements increase substantially in the second and third trimesters, as maternal blood volume expands and foetal iron stores are laid down in preparation for birth. This formula provides 24mg of elemental iron daily as Ferrochel® — the iron bisglycinate chelate form that is consistently shown to be better absorbed and significantly better tolerated than ferrous sulphate or ferric iron forms common in lower-cost prenatals. The glycinate chelate passes through the gut lining intact and is less likely to cause constipation, nausea, or gastrointestinal discomfort — a frequent reason pregnant women discontinue iron supplementation with standard formulas.

Choline — VitaCholine® Choline is one of the most under-recognised nutrients in pregnancy, with the recommended daily intake set at 440mg during pregnancy and 550mg during breastfeeding — levels extremely difficult to achieve from diet alone, particularly for women who do not eat eggs regularly. Choline is essential for foetal brain development, neural tube formation, and placental function, and emerging evidence suggests adequate choline intake in the second and third trimesters supports long-term cognitive outcomes in children. This formula provides a high-dose therapeutic level of choline as VitaCholine® — a purified, bioavailable choline tartrate — making it one of the most comprehensively choline-supportive prenatal formulas available anywhere.

Activated B Vitamins The formula provides B vitamins in their activated, coenzyme forms where relevant — supporting energy metabolism, red blood cell production, nervous system function, and homocysteine regulation — without requiring hepatic conversion from synthetic precursor forms. This includes active folate as noted above, as well as appropriately dosed B12.

Iodine Iodine requirements increase during pregnancy and remain elevated throughout breastfeeding due to the critical role of thyroid hormones in foetal and infant neurological development. The formula provides a clinically appropriate iodine dose to support healthy maternal thyroid function and foetal brain development throughout the supplementation period.

Additional Key Nutrients The formula also provides zinc citrate, vitamin D3, selenium, lutein, and vitamin C, among other vitamins and minerals, in a carefully considered, copper-free formulation. Copper is intentionally excluded — levels rise naturally during pregnancy and supplementation is not typically necessary, and may in some cases be counterproductive to zinc status.

The entire formula is encapsulated in chlorophyll pullulan capsules — a vegan, plant-derived capsule that avoids gelatine, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and other common capsule fillers — and is formulated with an ultra-low excipient philosophy, minimising unnecessary binders, fillers, and additives. The product carries TGA listing (AUST L 477893) — the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration's regulatory approval for listed complementary medicines — providing an additional quality assurance benchmark beyond standard supplement manufacture.

What Sets This Product Apart

Most prenatal vitamins sold in pharmacies and supermarkets are formulated around synthetic folic acid, poorly absorbed forms of iron (such as ferrous sulphate), and minimal or absent choline — three of the most important nutrients in the second half of pregnancy. NaturoBest Prenatal Trimester 2 & 3 addresses all three deficiencies with premium forms: Quatrefolic® (active folate), Ferrochel® (iron bisglycinate), and high-dose VitaCholine®. The stage-specific formulation philosophy — with distinct products for each phase of the perinatal period — reflects a clinically grounded understanding that nutrient requirements change significantly across the pregnancy and breastfeeding continuum, and that a single product cannot optimally serve all stages simultaneously.

Practitioner Note

Recommended by Stephen Roigard, Naturopath & Clinical Nutritionist. NaturoBest Prenatal Trimester 2 & 3 Plus Breastfeeding represents the gold standard of stage-specific prenatal supplementation currently available in the NZ and Australian market. The Quatrefolic® + folinic acid combination makes this formula appropriate for all patients, including those with confirmed or suspected MTHFR variants — a population for whom folic acid-based prenatals are suboptimal. The Ferrochel® iron bisglycinate is the most clinically meaningful upgrade from standard pharmacy prenatals, dramatically reducing gastrointestinal side effects that commonly lead to non-compliance with iron supplementation in the second and third trimesters. The VitaCholine® inclusion at therapeutic levels addresses a critical nutrient gap that virtually no other commercially available prenatal formula adequately fills. The TGA listed status (AUST L 477893) provides a useful quality benchmark when recommending this product to patients who may question why a practitioner-sourced prenatal differs in price from pharmacy equivalents. The intentional copper exclusion is clinically sound and should be proactively explained to patients to prevent unnecessary concern.
