Modified citrus pectin (MCP) is a specially processed form of pectin (a soluble fibre found in the peel and pulp of citrus fruits). The “modified” part means the long, complex pectin molecules have been broken down into much smaller fragments that can be absorbed into the bloodstream, rather than just working locally in the gut. Naturopathically, MCP is used for:

  • Detoxification support and heavy metal binding

    • MCP can bind to certain heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic) and help escort them out of the body through the urine.

    • It does this without stripping essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, or zinc, making it gentler than pharmaceutical chelating agents.

  • Oncology and immune support

    • MCP can bind to galectin-3, a protein that, when overexpressed, promotes tumour growth, metastasis, and chronic inflammation.

    • By blocking galectin-3, MCP may help slow cancer progression, reduce metastasis, and enhance immune surveillance.

    • It’s often used integratively alongside conventional cancer care, especially in prostate, breast, colon, and melanoma cases.

  • Cardiovascular health

    • Galectin-3 also plays a role in fibrosis and inflammation of the heart and blood vessels. MCP may help reduce cardiovascular risk by modulating these pathways.

  • Chronic inflammation and fibrosis

    • MCP is being studied for conditions like kidney disease, liver fibrosis, and lung fibrosis, where galectin-3 is elevated and contributes to scarring and inflammation.

  • Gut and microbiome support

    • Although the modified form is systemically absorbed, MCP still retains some prebiotic effects, helping to nourish beneficial gut bacteria.
