HistaQuel® is a practitioner-formulated dual-action histamine and mast cell support complex, combining two distinct proprietary blends — Mast Cell Secure™ and HistaCheck™ — to address histamine dysregulation through complementary and synergistic mechanisms of action.

Understanding Mast Cells and Histamine Mast cells are immune cells found throughout the body's connective tissues, particularly concentrated at epithelial surfaces, including the skin, respiratory mucosa, gastrointestinal tract, and urogenital tract. Under physiological conditions, mast cell activation and histamine release are part of a normal, regulated immune surveillance response. However, when mast cells become hyperactivated — releasing disproportionate or persistent quantities of histamine and other mediators — a broad range of systemic responses can arise, including nasal congestion, skin reactivity, gastrointestinal discomfort, and generalised immune dysregulation.

Many histamine-supporting supplement formulations utilise diamine oxidase (DAO) — an enzyme that degrades ingested histamine in the gastrointestinal tract. While DAO can assist with dietary histamine load, it is functionally limited to the gut lumen and does not address endogenous histamine released systemically by activated mast cells. HistaQuel® takes a broader approach, targeting mast cell function directly and modulating histamine receptor activity throughout the body.

Mast Cell Secure™ (375 mg per serving) This flavonoid blend targets mast cell biology upstream, supporting the regulation of histamine release at the cellular level. The four constituents work synergistically across overlapping mechanisms:

Quercefit® (Quercetin Phytosome®) is a patented quercetin-phosphatidylcholine complex developed by Indena S.p.A. (Italy). Standard quercetin has poor and highly variable oral bioavailability, largely due to its hydrophilic nature and limited intestinal membrane permeability. The phytosome delivery technology complexes quercetin with phosphatidylcholine, producing a lipid-compatible form that is significantly more efficiently absorbed. Published pharmacokinetic research has demonstrated up to 20-fold greater plasma absorption for Quercefit® compared to unformulated quercetin. Quercetin has been extensively studied for its ability to stabilise mast cells by inhibiting IgE-mediated degranulation and reducing the release of histamine and pro-inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-5.

Perilla frutescens seed extract contributes rosmarinic acid and flavonoid constituents with demonstrated mast cell-stabilising activity. Perilla frutescens has a well-established traditional use record in East Asian medicine for support of healthy immune responses, and modern research supports its role in modulating both Th1/Th2 balance and mast cell mediator release.

Luteolin is a flavone found in celery, parsley, and chamomile with documented mast cell-stabilising properties. It inhibits IgE-dependent mast cell degranulation and moderates the interaction between mast cells and activated T cells — a key upstream driver of persistent histamine dysregulation.

Fisetin is a flavonol found naturally in strawberries, apples, and mangoes, included for its complementary mast cell-modulating and antioxidant activity, and its ability to support healthy cytokine signalling in immune-activated tissue environments.

HistaCheck™ (200 mg per serving) This herbal blend addresses the downstream effector phase of histamine activity, helping to moderate histamine's interaction with its receptors through competitive inhibition.

Black Cumin (Nigella sativa) seed extract contains thymoquinone as its primary bioactive constituent. Research supports thymoquinone's activity as a competitive antagonist at histamine H1 receptors, limiting histamine binding and downstream signalling without the sedating effects associated with conventional antihistamine pharmaceuticals. Nigella sativa also has a long record of traditional use in Middle Eastern and Ayurvedic medicine for support of healthy respiratory and immune function.

Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica) leaf extract has been evaluated in clinical research for its ability to support histamine receptor competitive inhibition and to moderate the activity of pro-inflammatory enzymes, including cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase. It provides complementary support to the Black Cumin extract within the HistaCheck™ blend.

Why HistaQuel®?

HistaQuel® is formulated around a mechanistic gap that most histamine support products do not address. Its clinical differentiation centres on three key points:

  • Dual-mechanism, systemic action. By combining upstream mast cell stabilisation (Mast Cell Secure™) with downstream histamine receptor modulation (HistaCheck™), the formula addresses both the source and the effector of histamine dysregulation — a more comprehensive approach than single-mechanism formulas.
  • Quercefit® — a clinically validated, patented bioavailability-enhanced quercetin. Standard quercetin supplementation is significantly constrained by poor oral bioavailability. Quercefit® eliminates this barrier, delivering pharmacologically relevant quercetin plasma concentrations from an oral dose — supported by published pharmacokinetic data.
  • Clean, minimal excipient profile. Organic rice hulls, a vegetable-derived hypromellose capsule, and leucine — no unnecessary fillers, synthetic flow agents, or artificial additives. Manufactured without gluten, soy, dairy, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, or peanuts.

Cautions & Contraindications

  • Quercetin (as Quercefit®) may inhibit cytochrome P450 enzyme activity (CYP3A4, CYP2C9). Caution is advised in individuals taking medications metabolised via these pathways. Consult your healthcare practitioner before use.
  • Nigella sativa may have mild blood pressure-lowering effects; patients taking antihypertensive medications should use it with caution and under practitioner supervision.
  • Not recommended during pregnancy or lactation without professional supervision.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Store in a cool, dry place.

Practitioner Notes — Stephen Roigard

HistaQuel® is one of the more thoughtfully constructed histamine/mast cell support formulas available in the practitioner channel, with genuine differentiation in both mechanism and ingredient quality. Key clinical considerations:

Patient selection: This formula is most clinically appropriate for patients presenting with systemic histamine excess patterns — including those with suspected or confirmed mast cell hyperactivation, multiple chemical sensitivity, non-IgE-mediated food reactivity, chronic urticaria, histamine intolerance that extends beyond dietary exposure, or mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) as a secondary feature of conditions such as chronic Lyme disease, post-viral syndromes, mycotoxin exposure, or connective tissue disorders. It is less indicated for patients whose primary histamine burden is dietary (ingested histamine from fermented foods, aged cheeses, etc.) — for whom a DAO-based product may be more directly applicable and could be used concurrently.

Quercefit® and CYP450 interactions: At the doses in this formula, the CYP3A4/CYP2C9 inhibitory potential of quercetin is clinically relevant for patients on narrow-therapeutic-index medications, including certain statins, immunosuppressants, warfarin, and benzodiazepines. Always review the patient's medication list before prescribing.

Dosing flexibility: The recommended dose is 2 capsules twice daily (4 capsules/day). In clinical practice, some practitioners use a loading dose of 4 capsules twice daily for the first 1–2 weeks in acute presentations, then step down to maintenance dosing. The formula is well tolerated at higher doses in most patients.

Leucine sourcing — patient communication: HistaQuel® is vegetarian but not vegan due to leucine derived from duck feathers (a byproduct source). This is not an allergen risk but may be relevant for patients with strict ethical dietary preferences. Advise proactively at point of dispensing to avoid post-purchase concerns.

Combination use: HistaQuel® pairs well with a DAO supplement (for patients with a high dietary histamine load), Vitamin C (ascorbic acid supports histamine catabolism by upregulating diamine oxidase and histamine N-methyltransferase activity), and adrenal support formulas when HPA axis dysregulation contributes to mast cell hypersensitivity.
