Atrantil PRO is KBS Research's advanced practitioner-only formula — combining the patented three-botanical polyphenol complex of original Atrantil with the MEGATRIO spore-forming probiotic blend into a single, synergistic product. Developed by gastroenterologist Dr. Kenneth Brown and backed by clinical research, it represents one of the most mechanistically sophisticated natural gastrointestinal support formulas available at practitioner level.

The formula addresses two complementary phases of gut microbiome restoration: reducing the overgrowth of gas-producing bacteria in the small intestine through a precisely sequenced botanical mechanism, then repopulating the intestinal environment with resilient, clinically validated spore-forming probiotic organisms that survive where standard probiotic strains cannot.

The Three-Step Botanical Mechanism — Quebracho, Horse Chestnut, and Peppermint

The original Atrantil formula operates through a sequential three-step botanical mechanism that is unique in the natural supplement landscape, specifically targeting the microbial conditions that drive small intestinal gas overproduction:

Step 1 — Peppermint Leaf Extract (Mentha haplocalyx) Peppermint's volatile oils — primarily menthol and menthone — relax the smooth muscle of the small intestinal wall through calcium channel antagonism, reducing intestinal motility and cramping while creating a calmer mucosal environment. This relaxation of the small bowel serves a specific functional purpose in the Atrantil mechanism: it slows transit sufficiently to allow the quebracho and horse chestnut components adequate contact time in the small intestine to exert their targeted effects.

Step 2 — Quebracho Extract (Schinopsis quebracho-colorado, heartwood) Quebracho Colorado is a South American hardwood tree whose heartwood is exceptionally rich in condensed tannins and flavonoids — compounds with a strong affinity for binding hydrogen gas. Hydrogen is produced in the small intestine as a metabolic byproduct of bacterial fermentation of dietary carbohydrates. Excess hydrogen drives a cycle in which hydrogen-producing bacteria thrive, and hydrogen-consuming methanogens are also stimulated — creating a self-perpetuating cycle of gas overproduction. The quebracho flavonoids absorb this excess hydrogen, depriving the hydrogen-producing bacteria of their metabolic end-product and disrupting this cycle at its source.

Step 3 — Horse Chestnut Extract (Aesculus hippocastanum, seed, aescins) Horse chestnut seed provides aescins — triterpenoid saponins that specifically target the reductase enzyme used by methane-producing archaea (Methanobrevibacter smithii and related species) to produce methane from hydrogen and carbon dioxide. By inhibiting this reductase activity, horse chestnut aescins block the methane production step of the cycle, complementing quebracho's hydrogen-binding activity and addressing both arms of the gas overproduction mechanism simultaneously. The sequential botanical design — peppermint → quebracho → horse chestnut — reflects a deliberate pharmacological logic: each step creates the conditions for the next to be most effective.

The combined effect of these three botanicals is a disruption of the conditions that support abnormal small intestinal bacterial and archaeal activity, encouraging the migration of displaced microorganisms back toward the large intestine where they physiologically belong, and supporting more comfortable, balanced small intestinal function.

MEGATRIO Spore-Forming Probiotic Complex — 3 Billion CFU

Standard lactobacillus and bifidobacterium probiotics are not recommended for concurrent use with the Atrantil botanical formula, because the botanical mechanism works to reduce bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine; introducing additional non-spore bacteria would work against the formula's intended effect. Spore-forming probiotics are uniquely compatible with Atrantil's mechanism because their dormant spore state allows them to survive both stomach acid and the active botanical environment of the small intestine, germinating and establishing themselves selectively in the large intestine, where they are intended to support microbiome restoration.

The MEGATRIO blend in Atrantil PRO provides three clinically validated spore-forming species:

Bacillus subtilis HU58 — a well-characterised, extensively researched spore-forming probiotic strain that supports immune modulation, competitive exclusion of pathogenic bacteria in the colon, short-chain fatty acid production, and microbiome diversity. HU58 is notable for its documented ability to stimulate secretory IgA production in the intestinal mucosa, supporting mucosal immune competence during microbiome restoration.

Bacillus coagulans SC-208 — a lactic acid-producing spore-former with clinical research supporting its role in gastrointestinal comfort, bowel regularity, and microbiome balance. B. coagulans is one of the most clinically studied spore-forming probiotic species and is recognised for exceptional stability across a wide range of environmental conditions.

Bacillus clausii SC-109 — a clinically used spore-forming organism with particular relevance to post-antibiotic microbiome restoration. B. clausii has a longstanding clinical record in European functional medicine practice and is valued for its ability to restore normal colonic flora following disruption by antibiotics, illness, or dietary change.

Together, the MEGATRIO complex provides the microbiome repopulation counterpart to the Atrantil botanical clearing phase — addressing both sides of the gut restoration equation within a single product.

What Sets This Product Apart

Atrantil PRO stands uniquely apart from all other polyphenol gut formulas and spore probiotic products by combining both functions in a single, sequentially designed formula that is mechanistically coherent: the botanical phase creates the conditions in which the spore-forming probiotics can establish most effectively, while the spore organisms are the only probiotic types fully compatible with the botanical mechanism. This is not a combination of convenience — it is a purposefully designed, clinically reasoned protocol product. The quebracho and horse chestnut mechanism for addressing hydrogen and methane gas cycles has been the subject of published clinical research and represents one of the few evidence-supported natural interventions for the specific metabolic conditions associated with small intestinal bacterial dysbiosis.

Directions for Use

Therapeutic dose: Take 2 capsules up to 3 times daily with meals (maximum 6 capsules per day), or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. For patients new to Atrantil PRO, beginning at 2 capsules once daily and gradually increasing to the full therapeutic dose over several days is advisable.

Maintenance dose: Once relief is established, 2 capsules once daily can be used for ongoing gut microbiome support and prevention.

For trigger foods: 1–2 capsules taken before consuming known problematic foods may help manage symptoms.

Allergen Information

Vegan. Free from gluten, dairy, soy, eggs, peanuts, and shellfish. Contains tree nut (horse chestnut extract) — not suitable for individuals with a confirmed tree nut allergy.

Cautions: Not recommended during pregnancy or lactation. Do not use if you have a known allergy to any ingredient. Standard non-spore-forming probiotics (lactobacillus, bifidobacterium) should not be taken concurrently — these may be reintroduced once the therapeutic phase is complete. Consult your healthcare practitioner before use if taking prescription medications or if you have a diagnosed gastrointestinal condition. Keep out of reach of children.

Practitioner Note

Recommended by Stephen Roigard, Naturopath & Clinical Nutritionist. Atrantil PRO is the most clinically targeted natural intervention available for presentations involving small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), methane-dominant SIBO (formerly IMO — intestinal methanogen overgrowth), and IBS presentations driven by small intestinal dysbiosis. The sequential quebracho/horse chestnut mechanism is the only published natural intervention specifically addressing both hydrogen-producing bacteria and methane-producing archaea simultaneously, making this formula relevant where standard probiotic-only or prebiotic-only approaches have had limited impact. The PRO formulation adds the MEGATRIO spore-probiotic complex for concurrent large intestinal microbiome restoration — spore organisms are the only probiotic types appropriate for co-administration with the Atrantil botanical mechanism. The non-spore probiotic contraindication must be communicated clearly to patients, who should suspend standard probiotics before commencing Atrantil PRO. The therapeutic dose titration (starting low and building to 6 caps/day over several days) significantly reduces the transient digestive adjustment symptoms that some patients experience at full dose. Maintenance dosing at 2 capsules/day post-therapeutic phase supports ongoing small bowel microbiome balance.
